From faux pas to fluency: life as a French language student in Paris – Part One

We’ve all been there: you think you’re being clever, using a fancy French word or phrase only to find out you’ve said the worst thing imaginable. Or perhaps you were overwhelmed, and couldn’t find the words – and you just blurted out the wrong thing!

Learning another language can be a rewarding experience – but also an incredibly embarrassing one. Luckily, French language students all across the world can identify.

We caught up with Joanna, Lamberto and Ruth, who are all studying French at the Alliance française Paris Île-de-France to hear their tales of French language misery and woe. They also shared the enriching aspects of their experience, proving that it’s possible to make the long climb from faux pas to fluency.

Pourquoi avez-vous décidé d’étudier la langue française ?

Joanna (United States):
I am married to a Frenchman, and we are here for some time, so I wanted to learn the language he speaks.

Lamberto (Italy):
J’étudiais déjà à l’Alliance Française en Italie, et j’avais découvert qu’il y avait aussi une école à Paris. J’adore Paris, alors je me suis déplacé en France pour continuer mon apprentissage et améliorer mon français.

Ruth (Venezuela):
La France m’intéresse beaucoup, et sa langue encore plus! Je voudrais bien faire un master ici si possible.

Pourquoi à l’Alliance Française à Paris ?

Joanna:
I wanted to go to Alliance Française in Paris because I thought it had a good course load and that it was reasonably priced. It’s also close to where I live, so it’s really easy to get to.

Lamberto:
Je veux étudier la langue française parce que j’adore Paris et la France. J’avais un professeur qui m’avait beaucoup inspiré quand j’étais jeune. Depuis, j’ai toujours été fasciné par ce pays et sa langue.

Ruth:
J’étudiais déjà à l’Alliance Française au Venezuela. Je voulais continuer mes études et les approfondir au maximum – donc j’ai pris l’avion direction Paris!

Par rapport à la langue française, quelle est l’expérience la plus embarrassante que vous avez eu pendant votre séjour en France ?

Joanna:
I was at my husband’s uncle’s house, and they made this joke about a bush outside that had thorns on it. I thought they were pointing out that I should look at it – so I touched it. Turns out it was poison ivy.

Ruth:
Un jour je suis allée à un restaurant et le serveur était prêt à prendre ma commande. Je lui ai dit ce que je voulais, mais il ne m’avait pas très bien compris. Il a cru que je voulais commander cinq plats pour moi toute seule! Heureusement j’ai fais de gros gestes en disant non de la tête pour qu’il me comprenne.

Quel est votre mot français préféré ? Pourquoi ?

Joanna:
I like ‘C’est pas possible’. I think it’s très français!

Lamberto:
J’aime beaucoup ‘liberté, égalité, fraternité’.

Ruth:
‘Jolie’ – je trouve ce mot mignon.

Avez-vous un objectif à atteindre avant la fin de vos études ici ? Est-ce que vous pensez pouvoir l’atteindre ? Pourquoi ?

Joanna:
I would like to become fluent. I want to understand the language and the culture as much as possible! If I were to keep on studying here, I definitely think I would be able to achieve my goal because of the intensive structure. The teachers are inspiring and the classes are motivating. Plus it’s in Paris, so you can practice your French outside of classes!

Lamberto:
Mon objectif est de pouvoir comprendre une conversation qui se passe à la télévision ou sur la radio. Je veux pouvoir parler la langue sans avoir besoin de réfléchir. Je pense pouvoir atteindre cet objectif en étudiant ici, parce que les cours et les professeurs sont inspirants et très professionnels.

Ruth:
Je veux pouvoir obtenir un master en France à Paris, et je suis persuadée que j’y arriverai grâces aux cours de L’Alliance Française. Au début de mon séjour à Paris je ne parlais pas français du tout! En très peu de temps, j’ai constaté une énorme amélioration.
