French Film Review: Meet the Leroys -Nous, Les Leroy

Charlotte Gainsbourg is always a good reason to see a film. In Meet the Leroys, she plays Sandrine, a wife with two almost adult children, who has become unhappy in her marriage and wants to divorce her husband Christophe (José Garcia). He is surprised, shocked, and upset, but he comes up with a plan to win her back.

In what he thinks is a grand romantic gesture, he talks his wife into going on a road trip tracing all the significant moments of their past. Basically, Christophe is hoping that nostalgia will win Sandrine back.

He also brings the children (Hadrien Heaulmé and Lily Aubry), so Sandrine can see how much she will miss the family unit if she divorces him. There are some touching and funny family moments, and tender reminiscing between husband and wife, but is this enough to bring her back into the fold?

The acting is great all round, including the two young actors who play the children. The film is billed as a comedy, but it doesn’t quite convert the seriousness and heartbreak of divorce into a rollicking good time. Without giving too much away, the film doesn’t follow the American-style rom-com film script; instead, we get a mix of intense feelings and angst broken up with comedy and tenderness.

The film is inspired by the director’s (Florent Bernard) own experience of his parents’ divorce and is shot in Burgundy where he grew up.
