The beginning of a French jazz singer

Born in the sixties in Paris, Caroline Nin is a jazz singer mainly known for covering the songs of Marlène Dietrich and Edith Piaf. She started her career in the Paris jazz venue The Hollywood Savoy, performing the songs of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. In 1991, she moved to London where she was spotted by the British singer Marc Almond, who asked her to perform at his venue, the Freedom Theatre in Soho.

The Institut Français, which promotes French culture in Britain, offered her the chance to perform around England and United States from 1994 to 1996. In 1995, she also undertook her first international tour of Japan, China, Taiwan, Germany, Greece and Finland. In the same year she performed both her ‘Piaf’ and ‘Scarlet Stories’ shows in New York.

It was then that she decided to create her show ‘Hymne à Piaf‘, presenting her own interpretation of the works of one of the biggest French music icons, Edith Piaf.

‘Hymne à Piaf‘ staged for the first time in France

For the first time in Paris, Caroline Nin introduces her musical show created in honour of Piaf, in which she sings in French and tells stories in English. This show has already been staged in Australia several times. This year, Caroline Nin will be accompanied by pianist and musical director Antoine Lefort, and double-bassist Shankar Kirpalani.

Her aim: to be herself rather than trying to imitate the unique voice of la Môme. She takes the audience into the world of Edith Piaf where tragic, excess and love mix in, thanks to the music of great French composers: Charles Dumont, Marguerite Monnot, George Moustaki, Norbert Glanzberg and much more.

With the songs ‘Les amants d’un jour‘, ‘Mon vieux Lucien‘, ‘Mon Dieu‘ and the classics ‘La vie en rose‘, ‘La foule‘, ‘Milord or Non‘, ‘Je ne regrette rien‘, the singer takes the audience on a trip to the celebrated parts of Paris, between Belleville and Ménilmontant, where love and tears are one in the same – a world Edith Piaf knew very well.

“When I’m not on tour, I spend my time walking the streets of Paris, my hometown, the most beautiful city in the world.

“This is how I discovered the Essaïon Theatre many years ago. A true historical gem in Paris, tucked away in a laneway by the Pompidou Centre, I’ve always promised myself that one day, I would perform in its intimate Cabaret Room.”

And there she will be, from next week until June.
