By now most of you know that I’m an Australian harking from Melbourne, way down south in the Antipodes. Australia is multicultural and in Melbourne, the early migrants originated from Europe. Those migrants introduced us to many wonderful drinks and food, including espresso! In Melbourne we’re fussy about our coffee, but why is that so?
Why do Melburnians so love their coffee?
Let’s look at Melbourne before we go to France… It all started with Melbourne’s magnificent coffee palaces of the 1880s when the temperance movement urged Melbournians to ditch booze and drink morally superior coffee instead. Happily, we no longer need to choose one or the other – but something big had begun.

So when a Melburnian hits Paris, the search is on for the best coffee, it’s natural for us, it’s what we do. Bad or ‘lousy’ coffee as we’d call it, is never acceptable.
