I'm constantly impressed by the array, quality, and usually the reasonable price of fresh food in France: vegetables, fruit, bread... So why would the French serve pre-prepared frozen food to guests?
I shopped at Picard all the time when we lived in Paris! I lived the frozen sauces, which are packaged as ice cube-sized balls that you thaw in the pan. We also ate their frozen meatballs and the delicious frozen galette du roi!
yes, out of season fruit and vegetables are an issue. Usually the choice is not good quality, but the French population seem to love the Picard choices year 'round. I too love a good pea!
Picard frozen margherita pizzas are a great standby. You can buy a wide range of Picard products at Ocado in the UK. Their frozen mini pains au chocolat are also delish. 😋
Picard's lasagna is always a life saver when hungry friends stop by for a meal. Inexpensive, easy to add some "home made" ingredients, and a lot better than anything I have ever made myself. When I told a French friend that we finally discovered Picard she wrote, "Ah, vous avez enfin trouvé la France profonde".
Additives and salt are important considerations in my mind too Richard. Why do so many people swear by these products and claim that they are mostly healthy without chemical additives?
is that so surprising? it’s the herd mentality. also family with kids that work don’t have time to
cook. the alternative are frozen food from the supermarket, not cool! and also expensive with ugly packaging, and little choice.
so the yuppys and bobos tell themselves and each other that Picard is great. no different from people ignoring climate change and pollution, the big bosses don’t care …

haha, yes! Now we're starting to get to the reality behind the cliché.
Peas! Their English peas and garden peas are very good, and offer a bright note in the winter when you’re tired of endless root veg 😅

Thanks Liz
Perhaps we could make a list of our favourite items? I suspect that list would be very long ;)
