Part 3: Street Art - Belleville & Ménilmontant
I was staying on l’Île Saint Louis with a friend when we decided to visit the 20th the next day. Neither of us had been there before. Located in eastern Paris, Belleville is far from the tourist crowds. It’s on a hill, with great views, set off from the rest of Paris, and gives you a feeling of being on the edge of the city. When it comes to dining, Belleville is also distinct from the rest of the city, with an eclectic mix of international restaurants to choose from.
We stumbled upon le Baratin, and as I walked past I instantly remembered it from reading reviews - we were lucky to get a reservation for an hour later - just enough time for a leisurely stroll in the sunshine in Belleville Park. What luck.
Later we strolled the streets and enjoyed the street art and didn’t have time for much more. But since then I’ve been collecting information for next time - soon I hope. I’ll certainly be going back to le Baratin - a traditional bistro with a warm ambiance.
I found myself wondering if new, innovative, wonderful restaurants, owned by, or featuring young new chefs will soon venture to Belleville, attracted by cheaper rents, the way they did to the 11th arrondissement. In my view watch this space, but be patient :)
Where to eat? So, rather than turn this into a ‘listicle’ I’d rather refer you to a couple of lists by respected restaurant sites, and both are recommending a number of restaurants in 75020: Paris by Mouth, le Fooding. Note that le Fooding has an App - very useful!
And now I share further information provided by a friend - enjoy!
