Introducing New Contributor: Kevin Robles
It’s time for some sage fashion words from someone who works in Paris at the luxe end of the industry and shares his independent views with us. I’m thrilled to introduce you to Kevin Robles.
This is Kevin’s first contribution to MyFrenchLife™ Magazine. We look forward to his views, advice, and interpretation of fashion from Paris, covering both men’s and women’s styles.
Kevin introduces himself as follows:
“I am an American expat who moved to Paris from New York a decade ago.
I have spent much time observing French culture from close and afar, sitting in terraces, by the river, going shopping, visiting museums, and getting my fair share of time in Provence. It has taught me to live a little slower, more dynamically, and to value quality in everyday life.
I am an independent writer covering style, news, and culture. My goal is to bring you stories that touch on fashion and news with a Parisian lens. I write a weekly newsletter on Substack called Style Beat. See you in your mailbox!…”
a) →Cracking the Code on French Style: 5 ways to embrace French summer dressing
by Kevin Robles
What’s the secret to cracking functional French Style?
Every summer, the streets of Paris fill with thousands of stylish women of all kinds. Their aesthetic is stripped back: loose button-downs, fitted trousers, tossed hair, a butter-yellow top, open-toe shoes, and large bags. It is a mix of quiet confidence and print. Effortless in its approach and nuanced with flair.
Brands like Sézane, Isabel Marant, Lemaire, and Celine lead the charge of iconic French style. Their effortless attitude blends peppiness, the type of classics that can only come out of the rive-gauche, and toned-down bourgeoisie that’s adaptable and looks best with time.
Let’s get one thing straight: French style isn’t a formula, but it’s not a mystery either. It’s a code—and yes, it can be cracked…” says Kevin.
b) →One day, it is not going to be like this: nettle soup, fragility, food systems, and what comes after convenience
by Keith Christiansen
“One day, it is not going to be like this.”
My wife said it softly in a Brooklyn supermarket, not like a warning, but like a weather report:
- "It’s cloudy today."
- "Our food systems rely upon conditions that are not at all sustainable."Both seem a bit obvious once you say them out loud…” writes Keith Christiansen
c) When living on your holidays becomes your life
by Debora Robertson
As we skitter through our third year of living here, in this busy village, in this house which caught me by surprise, stole my heart, and made me give up a perfectly happy life in London, I’ve been thinking about the things large and small I’ve learned since we arrived.
Today, I share with you some of the highlights…” writes Debora Robertson.
d) Restaurant review: Dame, 38 rue Condorcet, Paris 9: A Second Visit, This Time for Dinner
by Claude Kolm
I had an outstanding lunch at Dame in late January and have been meaning to go back for dinner there, but that did not happen until last week when we went with friends. I can report back that dinner is every bit as good as that previous lunch…” writes Claude Kolm.
