Paris insight – ‘Go With The Flo’
Through an inconspicuous opening off the chaotic Rue du Faubourg
Saint Denis lies a tiny hidden street that appears very out-of-place,
but where everyone seems right at home.
Slipping onto le Cour des Petites Écuries feels like finding track 9¾
at Kings Cross Station: a magic portal to a slightly different world hidden
in plain sight. The cacophonous obstacle course of deliveries, debates
and cautious sideways glances melts away as you enter a pedestrian
passage populated by a handful of Bobo bars overflowing with
the “it” crowd (seemingly in search of street cred for
cocktailing in a No Go Zone, but having insulated
themselves by creating a bubble of
the 5ème in its midst).
Venture further down this secret passage and you’ll find a bustling
brasserie which seems to find itself not only in the wrong hood,
but the wrong century. The classic facade of the Flo glows
in the darkened alley like a beacon, or a dream.
The longer exposure demanded by the faint
light emphasized the animation of the staff
within and rendered the scene with an almost
painted quality…apropos for such a vision
lifted from the Belle Epoch.
