Paris Insight – ‘Splendor in the Grass’
On the edge of Paris’ Marais district lies the beautiful
Place des Vosges – one of the oldest, smallest and
most charming plazas in the city.
An equilateral square with fountains on its corners and
a royal statue in the middle, PdV is surrounded by imposing
identical architecture and lined by vaulted arcades,
all of which supply the space a sense of
symmetrical austerity…yet the
energy of its frolicking
crowds is anything but.
The atmosphere is vibrant as children splash through fountains,
teens flirt awkwardly, Bobo’s pass wine bottles and
strum guitars, business women sunbathe
in bras on their lunch breaks, and
young lovers share passionate
pique-niques. The park may
comprise a perfect quadrangle,
but it felt heart-shaped on this day…
