Though it's contrary to common travel lore, I find Parisians quite civil and polite. This could be relative, coming from NYC, where the people are generally friendlier and more courteous than you would expect. Nonetheless, there are holes in the fabric of public civility, particularly when it comes to public transit.
I returned from Europe with souvenirs valuable (chunk of the Berlin Wall that had come down months before), and forgettable. But France, and Paris in particular, stayed with me, and I always knew that I would return. And I promised myself I’d do so speaking French.
