Running 4 March to 27 April 2025: The Alliance Française French Film Festival in Australia (2024) saw over 188,000 attendees, making it the largest French film festival outside France.
Seeing French films on the big screen is such a treat! While SBS is a truly wonderful treasure trove, these films are best viewed not only in cinemas, but even better during a film festival with like-minded people. We laugh together, we gasp together - it’s great listening to what people have to say when the film’s over.
Charlotte Gainsbourg is always a good reason to see a film. In Meet the Leroys, she plays Sandrine, a wife with two almost adult children who has become unhappy in her marriage and wants to divorce her husband Christophe (José Garcia). He is surprised, shocked, and upset, but he comes up with a plan to win her back.
The program as always is diverse, with everything from the swashbuckling Count of Monte Cristo/Le Comte de Mont Cristo starring the fabulous Pierre Niney, to biopics Monsieur Aznavour, Saint-Ex/Saint-Exupéry, and The Divine Sarah Bernhardt/Sarah Bernhardt, La Divine starring the divine Sandrine Kiberlain.
Lee Miller: I was most inspired by her war correspondent photography, writing and activity in France during the Second World War in 1944 - 1945.
Jacqueline Taïeb was popular at the time, but in recent years, Taïeb's experienced a bit of a resurgence as the 1960s French pop scene has been revisited and celebrated among collectors and aficionados of the period.
