Who knew there would be so many rules around kissing, especially in France!
As the coronavirus spreads across Europe, French citizens are ordered to stop kissing!
If hugging is a common greeting in the United States among friends and family, French people almost never hug. When I arrived for the first time in the US, it was so awkward to me that it actually took me about six years to feel comfortable enough to truly hug my friends.
Because kisses are such an integral part of interaction in France, one might think that this implies that the French are more comfortable with intimate displays of affection, right? Not necessarily. Try hugging a French person.
Of course being American I owe the French a debt of gratitude for helping us win our independence all those years ago, but gratitude aside, I’ve been intrigued with all things French for longer than I can remember! But consciously, it probably started with the French kiss.
