French Music Monday: the inaugural edition
Bonjour, et bienvenue to the first installment of our new column, French Music Monday!
Here at Ma Vie Française™ we understand that Mondays can be a drag, so we’ll be bringing you a random selection of French musicians and French-language songs to help start your week. Because if you’re going to force yourself through a Monday, it might as well have theme music.
*Disclaimer* Now, I’m rather well-known for having a wonderfully eclectic taste in music (my friends tell me it’s less ‘wonderfully eclectic’ and more ‘horrifyingly bad’, but I digress). So if you want to help out with some suggestions of good songs/artists, let us know in the comments section.
Sexion D’Assaut – ‘Ma direction’
These guys are pretty popular on the French Top 40 scene, and I’m always up for a little rap. I can’t help but start dancing when I hear this song.
Coeur de pirate – ‘Golden Baby’
This Canadian singer-songwriter is also incredibly popular, and incredibly good. Her voice has a smokey quality to it that I love.
Keen’v – ‘Ma Vie Au Soleil’
I hear ya on that, Keen’v. Although I also hear the Little Mermaid’s Sebastian singing ‘Under the Sea’. Maybe it’s the marimbas.
Jena Lee – ‘J’aimerais tellement’
I heard this song for the first time in the Part-Dieu shopping centre in Lyon. I think I was in a bookstore. The chorus got stuck in my head and I haven’t stopped listening to it since.
Zaz – ‘Je Veux’

Apparently they’re calling her the French Adele. I can see why, but she has her own groovy style. A little soul, a little jazz, a little acoustic, and it really works.
