French Music Monday: Our bucket list

Hella Ibrahim - French Music Monday: Our bucket list - Ma Vie Francaise - My French Life - www.MyFrenchLife.org

Hello and welcome back to another French Music Monday!

Here at Ma Vie Française™ we understand that Mondays can be a drag, so we bring you a selection of French musicians and French-language songs to help start your week. Because if you’re going to force yourself through a Monday, it might as well have theme music.

It occured to me recently that it’s selfish keep this column all to myself. It’s not right that you, loyal readers, be provided only with my point of view on what constitutes good music (despite my clearly excellent taste. Ha).

So I turned to the trusty team here at MaVieFrançaise™ and asked: if you were stuck on a desert island and only had enough battery on your iPod to listen to a few French songs, what would you be listening to?

I’ll be asking them the same question once a month, so keep an eye out for our team picks!

Hannah Duke

Artist: Carla Bruni
Song: You belong to me
Why I Like It: It may be a cover, and it may be in English, but this song is always lovely, made even lovelier by Carla’s husky vocals. Beautiful.

Sarah Taylor

Artist: Christophe Maé
Song: Dingue Dingue Dingue
Why I Like It: It’s about a guy who hasn’t been paying enough attention to his girlfriend and she is now on the point of leaving him. I like it because they have had some fun with the subject, particularly in the video. The girl clearly has him wrapped around her little finger, but everything he tries to do to show his affection backfires.
*Sidenote: I love that song too. I heard it a lot on the radio when I was doing my Study Abroad, so hearing it takes me straight back to France. Also, Christophe Maé has the prettiest eyes. Just sayin’. – Hella

Emmanuelle Tremolet

Artist: Vanessa Paradis
Song: Maxou
Why I Like It: She started her career at 14 years old. I’m the same age as her and I grew up with her songs. She is creative, fresh and beautiful. My partner Alex and I remembered this song when we named our son Maximilien.
There’s also an English version of the song.

My very favorite French song is “Je suis de Celles” by Bénabar.” I also love “Con et Blasé” by les Ogres de Barback. And “Quand Vient le Petit Matin” by Les Matchbox is hilarious.

I love the older French songs:
    Ne me quitte pas
    Je revien te chercher
    Hymne d’amour

Thanks Elisabeth and Virginia! At some point I’ll be writing a similar article to this one with reader suggestions, so I’ll definitely be including your choices 🙂

Et beh moi j’aime bien Zazie et quelques chansons que j’adore sont “la dolce vita”, “je suis un homme” et “FM air”. I bought one of her albums on my first and so far only visit to France. Listening to the album brings back memories of my lovely journey through France.
