Australia follows France for its first Nuit Blanche

Melbourne has hosted its first ‘White Night’ but unlike what most translated ‘White Night’ to be – the streets lit up in so many lights that it almost looked like day – to faire une nuit blanche means to have a sleepless night. And, as the etymology of the title suggests, the celebration originated in France.

Cecile Bonnifait and William Giesen, a French-Kiwi architecture team, started Atelierworkshop in Wellington after meeting in Bordeaux. Their practice is founded on the idea of a complimentary dialogue between two cultures and a shared set of design priorities (with lots of French-style debate along the way!).

I focus a lot on material. First of all, I look for a material that can be shaped many different ways on the one hand, and on which I can work in the long run on the second hand. The universe of black jewellery, of tribal art, is both a call for travel and freedom. Now, it enables me to develop my imagination with the idea that anything is possible, like little good luck charms, salvaged material items. This all gave me a great openness on creativity and a great freedom in my work.
