I gobbled up this book in five hours. I have never in my life read a book in five hours—for a couple of reasons. First one being, I love making a good book last, and second, I have never had a book take a hold on me so quickly. I began reading and couldn't put it down until I was finished.
When I’m not living or traveling in France, I do one of the next best things – I read about it. These three books transported me.
“Translation is about recreating an experience you have reading, which necessarily means some kind of adaptation to get the reading pleasure across... I was frustrated in the translation because in English there are not nearly as many common words for wine barrel as there are in French.”
I want to shove underlined passages under the noses of uninterested Frenchmen, to point to them and say, “Look, see. This is why you are the way you are. This is why I will never be like you.”
